Location: 23-25 York place, Leeds City Center, United Kingdom

Size of projects [ m2 ]: over 3.000 m2 of commercial floor area

Full budget of construction [Euro]:6 mil.

Design teams: B&E consultants - superstructure, ARUP – other structures

Construction status:07/07 - Construction continued

Short annotation of structure:

York Place Hotel is a new five storey 37 bedroom hotel in Leeds City Centre for City

Retreats Ltd. The site, 23 – 25A York Place, is approximately 20m by 30m in area.

As recommended in geotechnical interpretative report, the foundations are to be constructed as piled foundations by Arup’s to bear onto the weak mudstone. The foundation sizes have been calculated based on a recommended safe bearing pressure of 250 kN/m˛ for pad foundations.

A reinforced concrete retaining wall approximately 1m highs, will be constructed adjacent to both 22 York Place party wall and 26 York Place party wall. This will retain the basement levels of the adjacent properties.

The current proposals allow for a 150mm thick reinforced concrete ground bearing slab.

The superstructure shall be designed to meet the performance requirements detailed in relevant National Structural Concrete Specification

The available structural zones are shown on the Architect’s drawings.

B&E drawings showing a reinforced pre-cast concrete superstructure from VST system with flat VST slab solution are provided to show the design intent. Two transfer levels at ground and first floor are in that project developed. B&E drawings showing system of reinforced pre – cast concrete shear walls and RC in situ columns are provided to show design intent. The current proposal allows for frame action to resist the torsion induced due to the shear.

Arup drawings showing a steel framed roof structure are provided to show the design intent.

A steel frame has been developed to minimize the weight of the roof structure.

Internal flights of stairs are to be provided as a  pre-cast concrete stairs.

Refer to Architect’s drawings for details.

Personal duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop concept of design of structure, incorporating requirements of external design team and architect
  • Preparing preliminary and detailed design of building structures and load calculation.
  • Production of 2D, and 3D calculation of building structures or single elements using finite element analyses
  • Detailed design, RC detailing and preparation of concrete structures according to British standards.
  • Produce detailed design information including calculations, design sketches.
