Structural -- Dynamics -- Projects

Cold Cut, Dublin, Ireland, 2007

Name of projects: Complex of residential buildings, Cold cut Road

Location: Cold cut road, Dublin 14, Ireland

Size of projects [ m2 ]:  over 11.000 m2 of residential floor area

Full budget of construction [Euro]: 10 mil.

Design teams: B&E consultants – full structural design

Design status: for construction

Construction status: 06/07 - Construction continued

Short annotation of structure:

three and four storey concrete apartments with permanent formwork

Cold cut is a new three and four storey complex with over 80 units. The residential complex is as a part of a new urban district on a green field site near M 50 in Ballyfermot, Dublin 14. The site, Cold cut road, is approximately 165m by 100m in area. The project is divided into 8 separated blocks of buildings A – H.

As is recommended following a visual geotechnical site investigation, the foundations are to be constructed as shallow strip foundations to bear onto the stiff upper clays. The foundation sizes have been calculated based on a recommended safe bearing pressure of 180 kN/m˛

The current proposals allow for a 150mm thick reinforced concrete ground bearing slab.

The superstructure is designed to meet the performance requirements detailed in relevant National Structural Concrete Specification.

B&E drawings detail a reinforced pre-cast concrete superstructure using the VST system with VST pre-cast flat slabs. B&E have been designed reinforced pre – cast concrete shear walls. The current proposal allows for frame action to resist the torsion induced shear stresses.

B&E drawings show steel and timber framed roof structure.

A steel and timber roof system has been developed to minimize the weight of the roof structure.

Internal flights of stairs are to be provided as a mixture of VST in-situ and timber stairs according to the occupancy of the units.

Personal duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop concept of design of the structure, incorporating the requirements of the external design teams.
  • Preparing preliminary and detailed design of  the building structures and load calculations.
  • Production of 2D, and 3D calculation of building structures or single elements using finite element analyses.
  • Interprete relevant soil conditions and provide geotechnical Engineering, design of foundations and settlement of building.
  • Detailed design, detailing and drawing preparation of steel, concrete, timber and masonry structures according to British standards and Euro codes.
  •  Produce detailed design information including calculations, design sketches and drawings.
  • Attend site during construction phase if necessary to ensure construction is in accordance with drawings or structural behavior.
  • Participation in design meetings
